Small Moments

Spending time with our family means so much more than day hikes and vacations. It’s also about all of the small moments in between that add up to years of memories.

Like today, when I walked with Max and Lucia to lower the flags in our small historic town. They have the responsibility of lowering flags during times of mourning or respect—one at our Town Hall and another at the World War II Veterans Memorial located at the historic “Old Rock School.”

As we walk, we talk about their day, envision what we’d like to do with our week (or in this case, weekend), and sometimes they just enjoy the time to show off their newest skateboard or scooter tricks! I am thankful for the opportunity to serve our community—to be a part of the place we call home. But I am most grateful just to have this TIME with our kids. Time to visit and time to dream with them.

I vividly remember a time when a demanding career left me feeling as if I hardly saw our kids. When Opal and I reached down deep to rediscover the way we truly wanted to spend our time, we knew it meant as much time with each other and our kids as we possibly could.

We know we can’t slow down time, but we can slow down how we spend it
