Ice Cream Friday
In Spring 2020, shortly after the onset of the pandemic, our family instituted “Ice Cream Fridays.” We were all confined to our house day and night all week every week, so we’d pile in the car and treat the kids (and ourselves) to ice cream at a different drive-thru establishment each Friday evening. Well, more than two years later, the tradition has stuck!
On this particular “Ice Cream Friday,” we’re sitting on a bench in our historic downtown eating the tastiest ice cream and watching the most amazing sunset fall behind our historic courthouse, all while live music plays in the background from the nearby summer concert series.
It happens to also be Move-In Weekend at our local university. So, the sidewalks are packed and our little vibrant downtown is bustling on this evening!
For years, Opal and I dreamed aloud about the university town in which we’d live someday. How we’d raise our family in a historic home and frequent the quaint historic downtown. Tonight, I’m grateful that we gave ourselves permission to rediscover our dreams two years ago and the freedom to relentlessly pursue a life that embraced those dreams. And I’m grateful for family traditions—the little things that would seem so insignificant to some but hold a special memory in your heart. That, and Ice Cream Friday…I mean, if you’re going to create new traditions, why not ensure they include ice cream, right!?!
