Our Dance

Our Mother and Son Dance at our son’s recent wedding reception.

I don’t think this is how I pictured our dance going, and yet, looking at our pictures, I am not at all surprised. This was the one time the entire day we had a chance to visit, so what do we do—we talk about whatever and we crack ourselves up!

I can’t help but think about how typical this is for the two of us. When I reminisce his growing up, I think about how this is just what we do—we talk and we laugh, whether it is at ourselves or each other, we always find the funny in whatever is going on.

I think about…

When he was a little toddler in his carseat, his blue sneakers sticking out over the edge, and I would tell him stories and he would give me his sweetest little toddler laugh.

When he as a little kid, and he would read jokes to me from his favorite joke book, or I would listen to his latest rap song, or he would demonstrate how it actually is safe to pull his sister behind his bike at top speed, he would keep me laughing no matter what.

When he asked me to teach him to two-step before a school dance and we practiced and stepped and twirled and we laughed at ourselves with each misstep.

Or when he was a teenager and we could finally watch just about any movie or show together or we would stay up late watching a favorite comedy, locking in on our favorite parts, and then quoting it back for weeks on end proud of how funny we think we are.

And now, our Mother and Son Dance on the day of his wedding.

It may have looked like we weren’t taking the moment seriously, but to be honest, I was soaking it in. Loving every minute. Resting easy that he was him and I was me and this is just how we roll. I have no idea what was so funny at the time, but it must’ve been good!

When the kids were so little, it was hard to imagine they would ever be grown. Hard to imagine we would ever have to let go. But here we are, and I am happy to tell you, it is just as good as all the rest.

The truth is, find the best parts and you can hold on to those forever. For us, we will be over here chatting it up and finding the humor in whatever it is!
