Where I Feel Most at Home
“This is where I feel the most at home.”
This afternoon, Max and I walked down to our creek to check out the new dams a beaver has built. While there, he spent a good amount of time rearranging rocks on his island, making a bridge out of a hollowed-out log, and sending fallen tree branches downstream to see if they’d float like boats.
We followed the worn paths from the dams into the woods, so he could check out the trees and branches cut at the other end. On our way back up to our house, he so nonchalantly said, “You know, Dad, when we were at the creek, I was thinking, ‘this is where I feel most at home.’”
This! This is why we upended our former life in the ‘burbs in 2020 and decided to walk in faith. We knew unbinding our life was written on our hearts. We could just envision a simpler life that placed emphasis on our family and the ability to spend as much quality time as we could with one another. It required stepping away from careers we had built, the place we had called home, and a trajectory that was intended to carry us to retirement.
What may have been a bit scary, most definitely unconventional, and seemingly impossible at times proved to be the best decision we ever made.
I’m with you, Max. This, too, is where I feel most at home!
